Women’s T20 cricket to be included in Commonwealth Games in 2022
Before the prospect of cricket inclusion in the 2028 Olympic games, the a sport has found a place in Commonwealth Games scheduled for 2022 that is to be held in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The international Cricket Council (ICC) and Commonwealth Games Federation announced that women’s T20 has been included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Since 1998 Games (held in Kuala Lumpur), this is the first time cricket will be part of the games, but only women’s cricket.
“Today is a historic day and we are delighted to welcome the sport of cricket back to the Commonwealth Games,” said the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Louise Martin.
Furthermore, “We believe the Commonwealth Games will be a fantastic platform to showcase the exciting sport of women’s T20 cricket and will help in growth of the game globally. We would like to thank the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their hard work and efforts to ensure that the sport is included in the Games in Birmingham as we believe it will contribute to a spectacular and vibrant multi-sport event. Cricket is truly a Commonwealth sport and we hope Birmingham 2022 will be the start of a long and successful partnership between Women’s Cricket and the Games.” She added
Eight International teams will be participating in the Commonwealth Games and all the matches will be held at Edgbaston cricket ground, Birmingham.
