The series between India and Australia is scheduled to start on November 27 in Sydney. Though team India is ready to take Australia head on but the only questions buzzing is who will lead the team when skipper Virat Kohli returns home for the birth of his first child after the opening Test in Adelaide.
Ajinkya Rahane remains the designated vice-captain but the name of Rohit Sharma is also being heard on the social media.
Veteran India cricketer, Harbhajan Singh, has now picked the man he is backing for the role in Kohli’s absence.
“[Captaincy] definitely a big challenge for Ajinkya Rahane because he hasn’t been captain for an entire series. Also, he’s pretty calm and composed, not so expressive. He’s very different than Virat Kohli,” Harbhajan Singh told Sports Tak, backing Rahane to continue being Kohli’s deputy.
“So it will be a new experience for him. Start of a new innings for him. I give him my best wishes and I hope that he will take the team forward and score runs as well,” Harbhajan further said.
Rahane is different in approach than Kohli when it comes to the leadership style. The contrasting style is what Harbhajan hopes will help Rahane take the team forward.
Rahane doesn’t need to change his style or personality, his game. Looking at a personality like Virat, Rahane might think that he has to adopt some of it to beat Australia. But I don’t think that’s necessary. All Rahane needs to do is be himself and make sure he gets the best out of his team,” he added.
Rahane has led the Indian team in two matches so far and has emerged victorious in both of them. The three Tests Down Under, however, will arguably his toughest challenge as a skipper yet.
