The designated vice-captain of the Test team, Rohit Sharma is not the right choice to replace Virat Kohli as Test captain, according to Sunil Gavaskar.
The former India cricketer has given his vote of confidence to Rishabh Pant.
“Rohit Sharma has fitness issues and you need a captain who can play all the matches. Even Sri Lanka faced similar problems with Angelo Mathews, who was often injured,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
“If Rohit gets injured you will have to look for someone else so it is better to appoint a player who is fit and doesn’t have injury issues. With the 34-year old getting injured every now and then, I am doubtful of his survival as a red-ball leader,” he added.
Kohli stepped down because of his rift with Sourav Ganguly, who is the BCCI President.
“Sourav is a leader in himself and he would not target Kohli for the disagreements they had in the recent past,” he added.
