Ever since the Indian Premier League ended, there had been speculations revolving around former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s retirement. It was expected that he would retire after the ICC World Cup 2019, however there is no solid update on the matter.
Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has suggested three young cricketers who should be groomed for Dhoni’s place as it’s time for the former captain to step down.
Gambhir feels it to be a practical decision to prepare the young generation for the future. He said, “It’s important to look into the future. When Dhoni was the captain, he invested in the future. I remember Dhoni suggesting that Sachin, Sehwag and I can’t play the CB series together as the grounds were big. He wished for young players for the World Cup. It’s necessary to take practical decisions rather than being emotional.”
Adding further, Gambhir suggested that it’s time to groom and give opportunity to young players like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan or whoever is believed capable enough to hand the burden of a Wicket-keeper.
Team India suffered an untimely exit from the World Cup inspite of their fabulous performance in the group stage matches. The performance of 38-year old Dhoni had not been up to the remark as he managed to score 273-runs in 9 innings at a strike rate of 87.78. The numbers have raised many questions on his capability of scoring runs.
