India’s legendary cricketer Kapil Dev on Monday broke silence on matters involving former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He expressed uncertainty on 2011 World Cup winning captain’s comeback to the field, he said, “If you haven’t played cricket for so long then I don’t think you can come back from anywhere,”
Dhoni has not featured in any format after India’s devastating defeat against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the ICC’s mega event last year. Post ICC World Cup 2019, he has missed tour of West Indies, home series against South Africa, Bangladesh, West Indies and Australia. He has also missed out on India’s ongoing assignment in New Zealand where India played a record breaking T20 series as they triumphed by 5-0.
However, speaking on Dhoni’s involvement in IPL, Kapil Dev added, “… But he still has IPL, his form there will be important and selectors should see what is best for the country,”
Admitting that Dhoni has done a lot for the team and the country by winning two World Cup trophies suggested, “Dhoni has done a lot for the country but when you don’t play for 6-7 months, you leave a doubt in everyone’s mind. And then that creates a lot of discussion which shouldn’t happen.”
Dhoni exclusion from the contract list had not a surprise and the 38-year-old wicket-keeper batsman was well aware of it. Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri had earlier hinted on Dhoni’s retirement plans from 50 overs format, however, he clarified on Dhoni’s intention to play in the upcoming T20 World Cup provided he performs well in Indian Premier League.
