On Monday, Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disagreement with the Selection Committee’s decision on automatically choosing Virat Kohli for the upcoming tour without reviewing his captaincy after the World Cup.
In his tweet, former batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has come forward in support of the Selection Committee and Virat Kohli saying, “Respectfully disagree with Gavaskar Sir with his views on Indian Selectors & Virat being retained as captain, India did not put in a ‘much below par WC performance’, they won 7 lost two. Last one very narrowly. And integrity a far more important quality as selector than stature.”
Gavaskar through his Mid-Day column questioned the process adopted by the Selection Committee where they assigned Virat Kohli his next assignment as a captain without reviewing his captaincy post World Cup. He further addressed the Selection panel as “lame ducks” and lacking in stature to work with the team management.
Team India had suffered a disappointing exit from the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2019 where inspite of the team’s fabulous performance in the group stage matches lost to New Zealand in the Semi-Finals where the top three batsmen failed to perform.
