Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s batting performance has raised quite a few eyebrows in the on-going ICC World Cup 2019. Along with fans, some experts have also questioned his position in the team.
When the entire world is questioning Dhoni’s credibility, the players chooses to stand by the legendary batsman. Captain Virat Kohli and vice captain Rohit Sharma have voiced about how the team stands strong with Dhoni by their side, he is like a pillar that holds the team together.
While speaking to IANS, the members of the team said that while everyone seems to be taking a dig at the former captain and focusing on his strike rate, what they seem to be forgetting is how Dhoni saves the team in most difficult situations. Stating that his ability to make the best judgement in any situation is at par with the rest. He has the ability to read the match and do exactly what the situation demands.
A teammate was quoted by IANS, “Let’s be honest. We are not England when it comes to batting. We have a tail and when Mahi Bhai walks in, more often than not, he needs to keep that in mind. He doesn’t have the freedom say a Ben Stokes has because England bat till almost 10, we don’t. We lost two wickets in the final over against Bangladesh the moment he got out.”
Further adding, “As for his experience on the field, he is the man who has the answer to every question we have. If Plan A doesn’t work, he gives you B, C and D. In fact, even during the game against Bangladesh on Tuesday, did you notice him constantly guiding Rishabh Pant and telling him about the areas he should target? You cannot buy that kind of experience in the market.”
Skipper Virat Kohli feels confident with Dhoni behind his back, tackling areas where Kohli can’t reach. In high profile tournaments, Dhoni’s presence is enough to make the difference.
