Earlier this year, captain Virat Kohli cleared the air for his favourite at No. 4 position in the squad, however after Rayudu’s weak performance against Australia and in the India Premier League, he was over-looked by the Selection Panel from the 15-members Team India squad.

Although, it was stated that Rayudu would be kept as a reserve for the World Cup in case of any injuries during the mega tournament but when Shikhar Dhawan suffered a thumb injury and Vijay Shankar sustained a toe injury, Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal were considered instead.

After being over-looked twice, Ambati Rayudu announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on 3 July.

Team India suffered 18-run defeat against New Zealand in the Semi-Finals. The team had shown tremendous skills and capabilities but destiny had a different plan.

Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, India were knocked out of the World Cup 2019 following an 18-run loss to New Zealand in the semi-final in Manchester.
