Indian-origin Tanveer Sangha makes it to Australian National squad

Tanveer Sangha, son of a Punjab immigrant has become the second Indian origin to get selected for the Australian national cricket team.

On Wednesday, Cricket Australia announced the squads for their upcoming tours to South Africa and New Zealand. The 19-year-old cricketer was among three uncapped players to get picked for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

“I was over the moon when I got the call. It took a while for it to sink in… I did not expect to be selected at such a young age,” Tanveer quoted by TOI on Thurday.

Tanveer made a name for himself in the ICC U-19 World Cup in South Africa last year and the Big Bash League.

Tanveer’s family moved to Australia from Rahimpur, a village 20km from Jalandhar in 1997. His father, Joga Singh Sangha was a farmer in Punjab. His father worked at a farm in Australia and later started to drive a taxi. His mother, Upneet is an accountant.

There have been many player who have played cricket at domestic and U-19 level in Australia – Jason Sangha, Arjun Nair, Param Uppal. But, only Gurinder Sandhu, a right-arm pacer, who made his debut in 2015 against India in an ODI match played in Melbourne.
